The children have really enjoyed making jollof rice, cooking plantain on the fire and drawing themselves looking at their hair and skin colour. We have also been reading stories with a focus on black Caribbean and African history and culture. One child smiled as he looked in the mirror and named features on his face. ”Look my colour is this one, I have face and my face is circle, I have 2 eyes, that’s my mouth, look at my belly, my leg and my feet”.
We hope by offering children first-hand experiences like these it will support them to learn about the different lives, cultures and experiences around them and start conversations around similarities and differences.
